Sam Darnold out against Arizona with a quad injury, and he played Chicago with a cracked rib

Sam Darnold will not play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Coach Mike Macdonald announced Wednesday that the Seahawks quarterback is out with a quad injury and is week-to-week, but will not go on injured reserve, ESPN's Brady Henderson reported. Macdonald said Darnold has a chance to be back for the Nov. 15 game at Las Vegas, the week before Seattle's bye.

Darnold hurt the quad on Seattle's final drive of Monday's 34-17 loss to Chicago. Macdonald also disclosed that Darnold had cracked a rib on the second snap of that game, when Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon hit him on a blitz as he threw, and played the rest of the night; Macdonald said he did not learn of the rib until after the game. Macdonald said Darnold could probably play through the rib alone; the quad is what keeps him out. He did not practice Wednesday or Thursday, and the team's report lists him with quad and rib injuries, Seahawks.com's John Boyle wrote.

A hard season, physically

It is the second time this season Darnold has been knocked out of the lineup. He hurt a glute on the fifth play of the opener against New England and missed the rest of that game and the next one, a 31-7 win at Arizona that Drew Lock started.

Since he came back in Week 3, the results have been mixed. Darnold has thrown 10 touchdown passes and nine interceptions in six games, completing just over 60% of his passes, with a Total QBR of 50.8 that ranks 22nd, according to ESPN. Pressure has been the theme. ESPN Research has him under duress on 38.3% of his dropbacks, the sixth-highest rate in the league, and completing 31.3% of his throws when pressured. Against Chicago he was pressured on 14 of 39 dropbacks and completed one of 11 throws for 13 yards and an interception in those moments, Henderson wrote in a separate analysis. By ESPN's box score he finished 17 of 34 for 188 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, with three sacks.

Macdonald's view of the week was blunt in one direction and protective in the other: he wants more efficient play from his quarterback, and he wanted people to know what Darnold had played through. "He's tough as nails," Macdonald said.

Who plays

Lock is in line to start, though he has been limited all week with a right elbow injury that kept him inactive for the last two games. Macdonald said Seattle would also prepare third-stringer Jalen Milroe, the 2025 third-round pick, in case Lock cannot go, and the team signed former UFL MVP Adrian Martinez to its practice squad on Wednesday for depth. More on Lock.

Kickoff against Arizona is 4:25 p.m. Eastern on Fox. Prices are on the game page, and the schedule is on the team page.
